Smoked by Ed Randolph
One of the best barbecue recipe books released in the past few years is Smoked by Ed Randolph of Handsome Devil BBQ. On top of having a ton of creative recipes, Smoked is also special among barbecue books because it has an intense focus on joints in the New York area and the Northeastern U.S. (Side note: If your father has a pellet smoker, you should also get him Ed’s newest book as well.)

Gunter Wilhelm knives are perfect for elevating Dad’s cookware.

New Jersey-based Gunter Wilhelm sells high-quality knives that are used by chefs and pitmasters all over the Northeast and the world. While the knives are a tad expensive, they are incredibly well crafted and will last a lifetime. Buy them here.

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in Stamford, CT has closed permanently due to COVID-19.

Here are the top BBQ and related food news stories you need to know about this week:

  • Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, one of the Northeast’s top barbecue chains, has permanently closed its location in Stamford, Connecticut, marking one of Stamford’s most-prominent business casualties of the coronavirus crisis. The 7,500-square-foot eatery was hit incredibly hard when COVID-19 shutdowns started occurring around the country. Dinosaur still operates restaurants in Harlem, Brooklyn, Newark, Buffalo, Rochester, and Troy.

  • It might have been lost in the shuffle of news, but LaGuardia Airport’s new renovated arrivals and departures hall at Terminal B was unveiled this past week. Part of the new concessions in the hall include Hill Country BBQ, Junior's Cheesecake, Think Coffee, and more.

  • As part of Connecticut's reopening, Hoodoo Brown Barbecue announced it will be opening with limited dine-in service starting on June 17th. The Hoodoo team has also invited the food truck Walter's Hot Dogs to come celebrate with them on reopening day.

  • If you’re looking for good takeout and delivery options in and around the Jersey Shore this summer, New Jersey Monthly has a full list of restaurants including barbecue joints and much more.

  • Boston announced the ability of restaurants to reopen with outdoor patio seating this past week, a look at what New York may become later this month. Eater Boston has compiled a list of the 100+ restaurants open for outdoor dining now.

NOTE: Given the coronavirus crisis, we will be leaving this section blank until things get back to normal. Many events continue to be up in the air, but I’ll be doing my best to keep the website up to date with events and dates that have been confirmed.
