As NYC restaurants have continued to adapt to the coronavirus pandemic, many have made steep adjustments in order to stay open. This includes laying off staff, changing hours, making menu modifications, adding alcohol to-go, and more.

It still feels a long way off from full reopenings, but many of these establishments have at least developed more robust takeout and delivery options in the meantime. Some have decided to develop their own platforms and some are exclusively using third-party apps to manage their online ordering. (As a reminder, ordering directly from BBQ joints is preferable to using a third-party app because more money stays with the restaurant.)

EAT ALL ABOUT IT

Here are the top BBQ and related food news stories you need to know about this week:

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que’s Brooklyn location is open for takeout and delivery but it has decided to ditch third-party apps for now.

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que’s Brooklyn location is open for takeout and delivery but it has decided to ditch third-party apps for now.

  • One of the biggest names in the New York barbecue scene, Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, has decided to stop using third-party apps like GrubHub and DoorDash after a “very rocky weekend” last weekend. Not only do the apps take a large cut of the sale, but they also appear to be overloaded as of late, owner John Stage said. Dinosaur is now developing its own delivery app so it can deliver food directly to customers.

  • Operation BBQ Relief, one of the top barbecue non-profits, has been working with the Salvation Army to feed needy Pennsylvanians. “For the next four weeks, the Salvation Army’s Eastern Pennsylvania & Delaware and Western Pennsylvania divisions will work with the relief organization and a network of barbecue restaurants and food distributors to provide 180,000 freshly prepared meals to individuals and families,” The Mercury reports.

  • Hill Country Barbecue Market was mentioned by the New York Daily News as one of the clever restaurants out there that is expanding its offerings with to-go groceries.

  • On a final (and more positive) note, the currently closed Carlitos Barbecue Taqueria was spotlighted as one of the best food trucks in New Jersey. Carlitos is best known for its blend of Mexican staples like tacos mixed with smoked meats, and I'm sure many folks are excited for it to reopen soon.

NOTE: Given the coronavirus crisis, I will be leaving this section blank for the next few weeks. Some events have been canceled entirely while others have been postponed to the summer or fall. Many events during the next two to three months are now up in the air, but I’ll be doing my best to keep the website up to date with events that are confirmed.
